PROFILE:
Sally Chengji Xing (PhD, Columbia University) is an associate professor of history and fellow of Nankai’s Hundred Young Leaders’ Program at Nankai University (Tianjin, China) and a visiting postdoctoral fellow of the Max Planck Institute of History of Science. She was previously Richard Hofstadter Fellow at Columbia University in the City of New York (2016-2021), visiting predoctoral fellow at MPIWG and fellow at the University of Göttingen in the project “Worldmaking from a Global Perspective: A Dialogue with China”.
Professor Xing studies the history of the China Foundation for the Promotion of Culture and Education from transnational and global perspectives. Her book manuscript (in progress), “‘Pacific Crossings’: The China Foundation and a Negotiated Translation of American Science to China, 1913-1949,” examines how and to what extent American intellectuals in the first half of the twentieth century influenced the development of Chinese science.
Professor Xing’s multi-archival historical research has been funded by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Rockefeller Archive Center, the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine and by other graduate research fellowships at Columbia University. Her long-term research explores Sino-American intellectual history in transnational approaches, from early twentieth century up until the late 1960s.

邢承吉，哥伦比亚大学美国历史博士、里查德·霍夫斯塔特学者（2016-2021），德国马普学会科学史研究所访问学者（2023-2025）、现为南开大学历史学院副教授、百名青年学科带头人。
主要研究領域為美國思想史、跨國史與全球史，「世界中的美國」。曾在德國馬普學會科學史研究所、哥廷根大學訪問，博士論文（2023）曾獲得the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR), the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Rockefeller Archive Center, the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine, Columbia University, Max Planck Institute, Worldmaking Project等機構的資助。
邢老师在《歷史研究》、《讀書》、《全球史評論》、《文彙報·文匯學人》、《中國青年報》、《澎湃·上海書評》等發表論文、學術綜述、書評、公共史學、訪談二十餘篇，合作翻譯譯著兩本（已出版與滕凱煒合譯的入江昭著《跨國史與全球史》），其策劃和主編的美國史訪談集《實踐歷史學》即將由商務印書館出版。目前正致力於完成探討20世紀中美思想史的中英文書稿《跨越太平洋》。
《跨越太平洋》通過中基會追溯中美思想交流的網絡，探討美國知識分子(尤其是哥大師院的保羅·孟祿、洛克菲勒基金會的顧臨、哥倫比亞大學的杜威、燕京大學的司徒雷登等)在何種程度上影響了中國近代的科學教育與研究，他們又如何與胡適、蔣夢麟、張伯苓、郭秉文、任鴻雋等中國知識分子互動與對話，反過來改變和塑造了美國對中國及自身的看法。它聚焦于中华教育文化基金董事会对于推动中国近代科学发展的历史作用。中华教育文化基金董事会（中基会）创立资金源自美国退还给中国的第二批庚子赔款，自1924年成立以来，中基会系统性资助了我国科学研究和教学的发展，理解其背后的中美知识思想网络对于把握我国科技崛起之历史脉络至关重要。
該研究的部分成果曾在南開大學「格拉丹東」美國史青年工作坊、武漢大學歷史學院、上海師範大學光啓中心、全國優秀青年學人年度論壇「發明現代：西方近代史中的觀念、知識和行動」、「跨國史視域下的歐美史研究」、哥倫比亞大學、康奈爾大學、美國外交史年會（SHAFR）、美國歷史學家年會（OAH)、馬克斯普朗克科技史所（MPIWG, Berlin)、哥廷根大學(University of Göttingen）、海德堡大學（Heidelberg University)等地報告。
INTRODUCTION TO MY RESEARCH:
Welcome to my Blog! I am Sally Chengji Xing. I am interested in thinking and writing US history from transnational and global perspectives. My book manuscript in progress, “Pacific Crossings”: The China Foundation and a Negotiated Translation of American Science to China, 1913-1949″, examines how the American intellectuals in the first half of the twentieth century influenced the establishment of modern Chinese scientific education, and were in turn, influenced by their encounters with China. My multilingual, multi-archival research has been funded by the Richard Hofstadter Fellowship of Columbia’s History Department, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR), the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Rockefeller Archive Center, the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine, GSAS International Travel Fellowship and numerous other graduate research fellowships at Columbia University.
I become interested in the Sino-American intellectual exchanges network behind the China Foundation when I came to reside in Morningside Heights since 2016. Over the past few years, I have worked closely with Mae Ngai, Casey Blake, Eric Foner, Ira Katznelson, Victoria de Grazia, Alice Kessler-Harris, David Atkinson, Thomas Bender, David Hollinger, Akira Iriye, historians in the United States who are interested in thinking about US history transnationally. On topics of history of science and technology, I work closely with Richard John and Marwa Elshakry.
Before Columbia, I studied Thomas Paine’s transatlantic experiences in Britain, France and the United States at Peking University, and went to Robert H. Smith International Center for Thomas Jefferson Studies as a residential fellow. After graduation, I will start with my next book project, The “two Toms paradox” of the Early Republic, and How China Perceives It. Two Toms explores how Chinese intellectuals since the early twentieth century have understood republicanism and the paradoxes of American democracy. For this project of early American intellectual history, I plan to work closely with early Americanists including Hannah Farber, Michael Zuckerman(U Penn), Elizabeth Blackmar and Andrew Lippman. My long-term research explores Sino-American intellectual history in transnational approaches, from early 20th century all the way to the late 1960s.
I write bilingually. I have also translated two academic works into Chinese, and actively engaged herself in public history writing in Chinese. My public history initiative in China, funded by History in Action” Award of the Mellon Foundation, collects my past academic interviews conducted with leading Americanists all over the world (A Practical History——Academic Interviews with Contemporary American Historians) and will be published at Beijing’s Commercial Press (book manuscript submitted, forthcoming). I have lived in Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’An, Hong Kong, as well as various parts in the United States, in Mid-Atlantic States (New York City-Manhattan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington D. C.), New England (Massachusetts), Mid-West (Indiana), the South (Virginia). I have also lived in the Dahlem area of Berlin and Gottingen in Germany as a visiting fellow.
